Greater Phoenix, known as "The Valley of the Sun" is located in Maricopa County, Arizona The Valley is comprised of 23 unique cities and towns and has a population of of 3,793,00 (2006) which is a 4% increase over 2005. Its population has increased over 39% since 1997 versus the US rate of about 12%.
The Valley of the Sun accounts for over 60% of the total population of the state of Arizona which is over 6 million. Maricopa County is the fourth most populous county in the US. In land mass it is the 14th largest county in the country at 9,220 square miles.
