Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain is among the most popular hiking trails in the Phoenix area. Reaching the summit of 2,400 feet with an elevation climb of 1,200 feet is rated a difficult hike and is not for beginning hikers. But those that reach the top are rewarded with amazing views across the Valley of the Sun.

Echo Canyon Summit Trail. Echo Canyon Trail begins easy enough, but turns into a strenuous climb requiring some steep climbs over large rocks and boulders. It ascends through red sandstone rock formations as it reaches the top with unparalleled panoramic views.

  • Trail Length: 1.2 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1,264 feet
  • Summit: 2,704 feet
  • Difficulty: Strenuous

If you choose not to conquer the summit, there are two short, easier trails at the base of Camelback Mountain for less-experienced hikers and those with limited time. You will still be rewarded with great sights.

Bobby's Rock. Many rock climbers spend the day at Bobby's Rock. At the bottom of the first set of steps, veer right and follow the trail post to Bobby's Rock.

  • Trail Length: 0.25 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 200 feet
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ramada Loop Trail. This easy trail loops around the upper Ramada at Echo Canyon. Take the trail to the 1/8 mile marker. After looping around a red rock butte, the trail descends to the parking lot.

  • Trail Length: 0.125 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 100 feet
  • Difficulty: Easy

Cautions and Warnings

Intense summer heat can be dangerous. The Best time to hike is October through April. See Average Monthly Temperatures in Phoenix AZ. Do not attempt to make the full summit hike without plenty of water and proper hiking shoes. You should be an experienced hiker in good health staying within your physical condition and abilities to handle a strenuous hike. Each year there are many rescues of hikers that found the summit hike more difficult than expected.
